Sustainability: Our materials

Fashion is the second biggest polluting industry in the world today. As a part of this industry, at Dora Larsen we believe we have a moral obligation to do the best we possibly can to produce our lingerie in the most sustainable way.

After auditing our practices internally, we are in the process of changing and implementing more sustainable methods across many areas of our business.

This month we’re focusing on fabrics and trims, and our commitment to playing a part in creating a more circular fashion industry.

Research shows that less than 1% of material used to produce clothing is recycled into new clothing. This August, we introduced laces into our collections that are produced using recycled yarns. The yarns are GRS-approved and are created from textile waste, fishing nets and other plastic waste.

Our cotton gussets on knickers are also 100% organic and GOTS certified, which limits the use of toxic dyes, bleaches and other chemicals during production.

For our future collections, we're continuing to source either recycled or natural and organic fabrics and trims for each of our pieces. In addition, any excess fabric will either be sold or donated to another organisation.

The fabrics and trims we use are sourced locally to the factory, which helps to reduce our carbon footprint. This is a critical element in achieving a more sustainable supply chain. If fabrics aren't sourced locally to the factory, this can result in multiple flights to transport the fabrics to the factory. Traditionally, this is not something the end customer typically has much transparency over, as the “Made in” we see on the label is simply the location of the final manufacturing facility.

Our fabrics and trims meet REACH standards and are OEKO-TEX certified, which means they are non-toxic and free from harmful chemicals.

Changing the materials we use is just one part of our mission to improve our ongoing sustainability credentials. There are a number of other areas we’re addressing, too. We'll be updating you guys in more detail on each of these areas over the coming months. As part of our aim to raise awareness and contribute to the charitable work that helps to fight environmental and social injustice, we’re donating £1 from every online order to a charity of our choice. Last month we donated to The Climate Coalition. This September, we plan to donate proceeds to Amazon Watch.

As we work towards building a more environmentally responsible brand, we’ll be assessing our progress and tackle change where we can. Read more about our sustainable practices here.
